Welcome to the Journal of Topical Formulations

Our feature article this month explains and explores the concept of dynamic synergy as a basis for creating combinations of ingredients and combinations of finished topicals.

Ingredients in topical formulations are made available to the body by applying them to the skin rather than by injecting or ingesting them into internal organs. With this in mind, it makes sense that understanding the skin at a fundamental level is essential to creating useful topical formulations. In our Formulator's Bookshelf column, we examine an anthropologist's recent book that discusses what skin is and how skin works.

In Sites Worth Seeing, we review a Web site of great value to serious label-readers, which also provides useful specific guidance to formulators.

The What Does it Mean? column is devoted to clarifying the meaning of "shelf life" as that term applies to cosmeceuticals.

Finally, our Announcements column reminds readers of some of the many ways to learn more about topical formulations, and we outline some of our plans for future issues of The Journal of Topical Formulations.

We are very interested in hearing from our readers; we invite everyone to participate in our online forum, where the discussions initiated here can be continued. We will also consider publishing reader-submitted articles and reviews; please contact us by email ("natural" at "topical-formulations.com" to share your ideas for future issues.

We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of the Journal of Topical Formulations as much as we have enjoyed producing it.

What is "shelf life"?

What is shelf-life?

Many fascinating things can be stored on shelves.
Some are beautiful; some are valuable; some are just dusty.
Some are alive, but are they "shelf life?
